Excellent fashion and DIY for home tips and tricks today? In May, Hedi Slimane has presented his latest collection for Celine, for autumn/winter 2022, which he chose to stage in two historical monuments in Paris, the Hôtel de la Marine and the the Hôtel National des Invalide. Entitled ‘Dans Paris’, the show was filmed by Slimane, off the usual Paris Fashion Week schedule and starred Kaia Gerber. Ralph Lauren opted to show away from the traditional fashion week schedule for autumn/winter 2022, instead holding an elegant evening at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. When I decided months ago to share my new collection in this intimate experience, there was no war in Ukraine, said the designer in a message to show guests. The tragedy and devastation we are witnessing now was unthinkable. Back then all I could think about was coming back together with my teams and all of you to share the hopefulness that collaboration and creativity can inspire. So, in the midst of this sadness, we go forward united in our hope for peace, and our hope for the end of this pandemic and a return to being together. I am so proud to be with you again sharing not only a collection, but an optimism for living that respects the dignity of all.” That optimism was reflected in a completely timeless collection of monochromatic pieces – punctuated with occasional bursts of red – in the sleek lines and tailored silhouettes that the label does so well. The new decade is well and truly here and while 2022 has shown us a new world we are still adjusting to, 2022 wedding hair feels a little different to previous years. Why? Well, nothing is off-limits with much smaller weddings, elopements and impromptu ceremonies. It’s an interesting time where anything goes and while there may be less of a focus on trends this year, there are defining looks that we are likely to continue to see.
In a typical season, our most-viewed shows list is fairly steady, but fall 2022 was no typical season. Early on in Milan, almost two years to the day after Covid broke out in Italy, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted any sense of post-pandemic return to normalcy the industry was hoping for. The rest of the season was an open question, whether or not designers chose to confront it: What is fashion’s place in a moment of incipient war? After a very strange few years, a relatively normal schedule of fashion shows wrapped in March. For autumn/winter 2022, plenty of designers were back on the physical schedule after taking a few seasons off due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while more international editors and influencers also flew around the globe to sit front row at the major shows as restrictions eased.
It was invigorating and inspiring to see runway shows return (almost) to normal, and “fashion moments” were plentiful, playful, and highly shareable, and as such, a few went viral. Balenciaga’s Demna Gvasalia merged a runway and a fake movie premiere celebrity red carpet to celebrate the arrival of a new collection. In addition, the brand created a fashion take on a Simpsons episode. Gucci took over Hollywood with runway chocked with high-profile friends of the brand in extravagant costume-inspired pieces that wouldn’t look out of place in a 1940s blockbuster. Chanel’s ’90s supermodel–inspired collection saw endless Instagram posts capturing sashaying models in monochromatic bikinis. Fashion fun was clearly back on the menu, and it was served up for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
One of the most wearable trends to come out of this round of runways was the pleated skirt, and while there was a light scattering of mini incarnations reminiscent of this summer’s favourite tennis skirt, for SS22 it’s all about the pleated midi. Other than that, there really are no rules. Printed, plain, colourful, monochrome, paired with knits or paired with a bralette – as long as it’s pleated then you’re bang on the money. Pleated skirts may be midi for next season, but all others are raising the hemlines to minuscule lengths. These are minis that the supermodels of the ’90s would’ve been proud to wear, with well over half of the thigh exposed beneath the brief slip of fabric. Opt for super-statement shades, prints or fabrics to ensure that while the skirt may be small it still packs a real punch. Curly Bangs, loves to experiment with her hair. We’ve seen the triple threat wear long waves, a red bob, and stick-straight strands, among other styles. But it’s her curly hair and matching curly bangs that are majorly trending. Stacy Ho, a hairstylist at Méche Salon in Los Angeles, believes bangs will continue to reign. “Everywhere we look, people are loving the comeback of the bang,” she says. “They can be cut to be soft, strong and chic, or short and edgy; and they come in so many lengths, shapes, textures, and styles.” Forget what you heard about curly bangs — with the right stylist, you can find the curly fringe for you.
As per its new approach, Jacquemus did not present its spring/summer 2022 collection last September, but instead hosted its show this week, just before the pieces will drop in stores. This occasion marked the brand’s first show outside of France, choosing to host the colourful show on a beach in O’ahu, Hawai’i. The islands of Hawai’i, with their awe-inspiring landscapes, diverse climates, and untold biodiversity, stood out as the perfect complement to the exuberant ‘Le Splash’ collection…As a guest to Hawai’i, Jacquemus is taking great care to respect this location, culture, and way of life. We are primarily working with talent and businesses from O’ahu and the neighbouring islands to leave as small of a footprint as possible. Find more information at fashion blog.
